After School Program Schedule  

SUPER SOCCER STARS

*This program is for K-3rd grade students (3:15-4:15p.m.). If there is enough interest the 3 and 4 year olds will participate in Super Soccer Stars from 4:15-5:15p.m.

Get the ball rolling! Super Soccer Stars, the New York area's most popular soccer development program, comes to the Academy of St. Joseph! Dynamic international coaches work with every student to develop skills, self-confidence, and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive environment. Positive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio ensure that each child will improve his or her soccer skills through engaging warm-ups, drills, and games—all while having endless fun!

Each child receives a free t-shirt the first day of class. An additional registration form is required by Super Soccer Stars and is included with this mailing. Please complete and return with all registration materials.

 

ARTS IN EDUCATION (Dance, Music, Theater and Visual Art)

Instructed by John Byrne

John Byrne brings Arts in Education to our school, an integrated arts enrichment program which provides a meaningful introduction and foundation in the arts for lifetime enhancement. This hour long class explores DANCE, MUSIC, THEATER and VISUAL ART to expand each child's creativity and introduce them to all aspects of the Arts in a multitude of ways. The children will commence the semester with a final demonstration for parents and friends, giving them an opportunity to explore performance.

 

John Byrne is an established teacher and choreographer and a former member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company. He has choreographed major productions for stars including Elton John, Norah Jones and Lady Gaga, and has worked on the shows like, So You Think You Can Dance and films like Across the Universe. John has taught residencies and workshops in Europe, Mexico and the Middle East to a variety of populations and ages. John has taught in over 40 public and private school enrichment programs and is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and Juilliard School. John's passion for Arts and Education has lead him to develop this program to inspire children and give them quality exposure to the Arts in a fun environment!

 

ART

Instructed by Beata Drozd

Our very own Art Instructor, Ms. Drozd will offer two exciting programs. The first class will allow children to explore and become comfortable with various art media as they work through a variety of arts and crafts projects.  The second group will be involved in a variety of creative projects using only recycled materials.  Students will be made aware of environmental issues impacting our world and what they can do to help. Both programs promise to be both fun and educational!  (For new parents to our school, the children love Art with Ms. Drozd.)

 

YOGA

Instructed by Lalita Dunbar

Lalita Dunbar has initiated and implemented ongoing original yoga programs in four New York City schools, both public and private.  She holds her International Certification-Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Teacher Training Program.  Lalita is dedicated to enthusiastic and dynamic teaching as a vehicle for children and adults to better understand and appreciate the value of self care.  She comes to us highly recommended from Philosophy Day School.

 

SPANISH

Instructed by a teacher from CENY Centro Educatovio, Inc.

Students will be introduced to the Spanish language and culture as they explore Art, Music, Movement, and Games in Spanish.  This will be a wonderful support to our own daily Spanish program. 

 

VIOLIN

Group Suzuki Violin Lessons for Beginner and Intermediate Students.

Instructed by Jennifer Ahn

Students will learn to play the violin through a friendly step-by-step approach in which they acquire confidence, problem-solving skills and a feeling of accomplishment along the way. Proper technique will be learned through activities that will keep the child engaged and make learning the violin a fun and positive experience.

Jennifer Ahn holds a Masters of Music and an Artist Diploma from Yale University where she was a full tuition scholarship student. She completed her Suzuki Teacher Training at the prestigious School for Strings and teaches at several Manhattan music schools. She has concertized across North America, Europe and Asia in the world’s leading concert halls and regularly performs at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

CHESS

Instructor Alanna Katz

Head Start Chess by NYC Chess Inc., owners of the world famous Village Chess Shop on Thompson Street and the largest established chess playing and teaching community in NYC.  This team focuses on engaging children at the earliest age possible.  The emphasis is on fun and early achievement promises to sustain children’s interest in this all important game for years to come.  Children will learn from the very best at their craft and have a blast doing it!

 

BALLET

Instructed by New York City Ballet Teaching Artist-Lyn Zeleny

Ballet fundamentals taught by a teaching artist from New York City Ballet’s Education Department; a professional ballerina with an extensive performing career and over twenty years of teaching experience. Appropriate for boys and girls desiring to develop body control, posture, coordination, and timing.

Ms. Zeleny has performed extensively at the Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center, NYC including with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Lyn was hand selected to be coached on much of her classical repertoire by Dame Margot Fonteyn, the world renowned Prima Ballerina of London’s Royal Ballet. She has also been selected by choreographers to dance numerous world premieres, and has worked with such greats as Rudolph Nureyev, Hans van Manen of the Dutch National Ballet, Henning Albrechtsen of the Royal Danish Ballet and as partner to William Carter, Principal Dancer for American Ballet Theatre.

Separate completed ballet registration form is required before participation. The form is included with this mailing. Please complete and return with all registration materials.

Girls’ attire: pink leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers, hair pulled back.

Boys’ attire: white T-shirt, black tights, bike shorts or sweat pants, black or white ballet slippers.
