Our average class size is 12 and our maximum is 18 per class. Once a class reaches 18, a teaching assistant is added to help the head teacher.
The school is housed in a historic six-story building located in Greenwich Village, 1.5 blocks away from New York University and Washington Square. It is adjacent to the New York City Landmark University Parish of St. Joseph on 6th Avenue. The building has been completely renovated and has a beautiful assembly hall, inviting foyer, dining hall, library, art studio, and ten classrooms. The building is air-conditioned and has an elevator.
Qualifying students (those not within walking distance) will receive student metro cards for weekday use. The 1, A, C, E, B, D, F, and M trains all stop within 1.5 blocks of the Academy.
Students attend P.E. twice weekly. Additionally, two times per month students in grades 1-8 travel by private bus to Chelsea Piers for P.E. Upper School students also use the gym at Our Lady of Pompeii one to two times a week. For the 2017-2018 school year, after-school sports programs will include track, basketball, soccer, and Ultimate Frisbee.
The school uniform is worn with pride. Academy uniforms are ordered from Lands’ End and more information can be found on our school website.
The Academy of St. Joseph provides weekly instruction in technology for grades 1-8. Students in the Upper School get assigned their own laptop for the duration of the academic year to be used while in the school building. Students in Lower School have iPads. All classrooms are equipped with Smartboards.
After School Programs
Monday – Friday 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
The Academy of St. Joseph offers many exciting after-school programs for students. These programs currently include coding, fencing, ballet, chess, piano, guitar, mini golf, art, yoga, and sports.
Extended Day/ Scholars Haven
Monday – Friday 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Each day during Scholar’s Haven an opportunity is provided for students to work on their homework in a supervised setting. This program charges a fee of $10.00 per hour.
Each quarter students in the Upper School choose two electives to enhance their academic experience. Examples of electives include print making, weaving, photography, essay writing, manners and etiquette, chess, and violin. Electives are taught by the faculty, as well as parents and other experts in the community.
